God’s Love Never Quits

10 Mar

Psalm 136 is 26 verses long, however the line, “His love never quits” is repeat 13 times. So this is a relatively short psalm.

The psalmist tells of God’s abiding faithfulness to give the people of Israel a land of their own. Of course to get that land other tribes are conquered by God. It seems odd to me to thank God for conquering other people, but I have never lived in a place that was occupied by another “tribe”. This morning I think about Ukraine and wonder how they would experience this psalm.

-3 Thank God! He deserves your thanks.
His love never quits.
Thank the God of all gods,
His love never quits.
Thank the Lord of all lords.
His love never quits.

The psalm begins with words of thanksgiving. In the New Revised Standard Version the refrain line is, “his steadfast love endures forever”. Although the NRSV is familiar to me, I like the strength and power of The Message. [of course I substitute His for God’s]

For me, there is a passion in this psalm of people who have relied heavily on the grace of God to form their land and their lives. [As I was thinking about this psalm and the fact that I have no land, or an understanding of relying on God for a particular place to live, the landscaping young men came to trim up the trees and shrubs around the house. So, I guess I do belong to at least a small portion of land.]

4-22
Thank the miracle-working God,
His love never quits.
The God whose skill formed the cosmos,
His love never quits.
The God who laid out earth on ocean foundations,
His love never quits.
The God who filled the skies with light,
His love never quits.
The sun to watch over the day,
His love never quits.
Moon and stars as guardians of the night,
His love never quits.
The God who struck down the Egyptian firstborn,
His love never quits.
And rescued Israel from Egypt’s oppression,
His love never quits.
Took Israel in hand with his powerful hand,
His love never quits.
Split the Red Sea right in half,
His love never quits.
Led Israel right through the middle,
His love never quits.
Dumped Pharaoh and his army in the sea,
His love never quits.
The God who marched his people through the desert,
His love never quits.
Smashed huge kingdoms right and left,
His love never quits.
Struck down the famous kings,
His love never quits.
Struck Sihon the Amorite king,
His love never quits.
Struck Og the Bashanite king,
His love never quits.
Then distributed their land as booty,
His love never quits.
Handed the land over to Israel.
His love never quits.

Even though the psalmist speaks of God conquering land for the tribes, the sense of God’s miracle-working power in each new day is clear to me. God remembers us in the most difficult of times, God’s love never quits. What can you affirm about God’s love never quitting? Could you make psalm like this that expresses your thankfulness for God’s steadfast love?

23-26
God remembered us when we were down,
His love never quits.
Rescued us from the trampling boot,
His love never quits.
Takes care of everyone in time of need.
His love never quits.
Thank God, who did it all!
His love never quits!

Enjoy this day. Find time to praise God and it will be even better. Peace.
