I’d like to Teach the World to Sing

6 Mar

Coca-Cola3As I read through the very short psalm 133 the old coca cola commercial comes to mind. Do you remember it? Hippy type people on a hillside singing: “I’d like to teach the world to sing in perfect harmony; I’d like to buy the world a coke and keep it company; it’s the real thing” I think that was the way it goes.

The desire for harmony is an old and constant longing for the people of God. It is wonderful when friends, family, neighborhoods, cities, nations get along with one another.

1-3 How wonderful, how beautiful,
when brothers and sisters get along!
It’s like costly anointing oil
flowing down head and beard,
Flowing down Aaron’s beard,
flowing down the collar of his priestly robes.
It’s like the dew on Mount Hermon
flowing down the slopes of Zion.
Yes, that’s where God commands the blessing,
ordains eternal life.

During this season of Lent we have an opportunity to focus on and grow in our spiritual life. [I am 24 hours chocolate free]. What if we used this time of Lenten discipline to forgive those who we are at odds with; try to understand those who annoy or anger us; pray for those in whom we find no bridge to understanding.

I do believe that God wants to teach us how to sing in perfect harmony. God is the only one who can.
